Japanese Invasion of the Philippines 1941

Japanese Conquest of the Philippines in World War 2. The Battle for Corregidor was the culmination of the Japanese campaign for the conquest of the Philippines. The fall of Bataan in April 9, 1942, ended all organized opposition by the U.S. Army Forces -- Far East (USAFFE) to the invading Japanese forces on Luzon in the northern Philippines. The island bastion of Corregidor, with its network of tunnels and formidable array of defensive armament, along with the fortifications across the entrance to Manila Bay, was the remaining obstacle to the 14th Japanese Imperial Army of Lieutenant General Masaharu Homma. The Japanese had to take Corregidor; as long as the island remained in American hands, they would be denied the use of the Manila Bay, the finest natural harbor in the Far East.

The Philippines 1941-1945

Philippines during World War II The Sack of Manila A Photo Montage by Alfredo Villanueva Music by Richard Wagner (Orchestral Prelude to Lohengrin) Comments by Fred Baldassare "For the sake of historical truth, I must comment that the destruction of Manila, which was "The Pearl of the Orient", before the war, was done in great part by US bombers and US artillery. Gen. Yamashita, unlike Gen. MacArthur in 1941, did not declare Manila an "Open City", which would have freed Manila from hostile activity. After Gen. Yamashita withdrew most of his troops to the Mountain Province, a large contingent of Japanese soldiers and sailors, and Korean marines stayed behind and defended the city, under the command of Admiral Iwabuchi. Manila had to be liberated by fighting it out, street by street, and building to building. With the American and Filipino liberators just on the other side of the Pasig River, the Japanese soldiers and sailors, and the Korean marines proceeded to go from one city block to another, burning and looting the homes, raping the women, and murdering as many citizens of Manila as they could, in biblical proportions. The Ermita, Malate, and Pasay districts were most greatly affected. The Japanese Military, in Manila, declared war on its civilian population. Conservative estimates state the the Manila Massacre, which took place in February, 1945, claimed the lives of over 111,000 civilians, an estimate of 35,000 more than either Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Most of the pictures shown above were taken by the US Army Signal CORP, soon after the liberation of Manila. - The Sack Of manila- by Fred Baldassare http://battlingbastardsbataan.com/som.htm

Emilio Aguinaldo in the Filipino-American War

A short documentary on Emilio Aguinaldo, a leader in the Philippines during the Filipino-American War, also known as the Filipino Insurrection. Due to the many comments I've had about this, I would like to clear a few things up. In the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo is not considered a hero. Some Filipinos say that he is, while others insist he is not. (Take a look at the comments for different viewpoints.) Calling the war for independence "the Filipino Insurrection" was the way that the American media and government devalued the revolution. The use of the term in this documentary was meant to be historically accurate from the American history books. The man referred to in this documentary was the leader of a group that wanted independence for the Philippines from America after Spanish occupation. He may or may not be a hero; that is for the viewer to decide. UPDATE: It would be quite nice of all of you to stop using this video as a battleground. It was a HIGH SCHOOL VIDEO PROJECT, not a nationally-shown documentary. It was not meant to offend anyone. Please don't use it to insult me or others. Song: "American Junk" by the APO Hiking Society
